Could my cat's sudden death be related to a misdiagnosed IBD?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

So recently my cat passed away and I'm having a really tough time understanding how. My vet diagnosed her with IBD but said she was perfectly healthy otherwise. Then last week I came home and she was on her side on the floor in rigor mortis. I brought her in and I asked how this could have happened and he said it was just something out of the ordinary. Could there be something he was missing when diagnosing IBD? They tested for cancer and it came back negative. I guess I just need some closure.

I'm sorry for your loss. The most commonly condition mistaken for IBD is intestinal lymphoma, i'm not sure what tests have been done for cancer but in order to diagnose intestinal lymphoma she should have been sent to an ultrasound specialist, i guess that would be the first thing that comes to mind but of course without being able to run tests and check the full history it's just an educated guess.
