Why does my senior cat keep falling with recurring ear infections?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 17 years and 5 months old | 6 lbs

17 yrold cat falls over, seems related to weakness in front legs. Vet discovered ear infection. 2 weeks of antibiotics seemed to clear it, but after it comes back. She's got poor balance, not responding when called, eats & goes to bathroom normally-- lost weight but regained when i started hand feeding her. Vet put on meclixine 12.5mg, but makes her more dizzy. 2 more courses of antibiotics helped, but it comes back when done. Can't afford vet againtill feb 22. Any thoughts on what it might be?

If the antibiotics are helping, it's probably a middle ear infection indeed. a sample needs to be taken from the ear and sent for culture and sensitivity, then the best antibiotic can be chosen according to the result. the course of treatment must be longer next time, at least 4 weeks as these infections take a long time to resolve.
