My dog had eye cancer. How to monitor for recurrence without stress?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 40 lbs

Our rescue dog had a cancerous tumour removed from his eye and lost his eye in the process. How can we be sure the cancer has gone or not come back? Is there a simple blood test or anything we can do? We don't want to put him through much.

In general there is not a simple blood test for cancer. The tests recommended to screen for recurrence or spread of cancer vary based on the type of tumor that was diagnosed. Sometimes periodic chest x-rays, abdominal ultrasound, or examinations to look for enlarged lymph nodes or skin masses are recommended. Ask your veterinarian what would be recommended based on biopsy results.
