Why is my male dog's penis so enlarged, red, and long? Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I work with dogs daily and today at work I witnessed something very unusual and I want to know if this is normal in Male dogs, a mini dashing comes into my work regurlarly and today his penis was so enlarged itbwaa the length of this body and it sounds ridiculous to say but I was very scared and worried, I know dogs can get erections but why was it so enlarged? Very swollen, red, and I would say about 6 inches long. It was scary to see

If a male dog is aroused by a female dog that is in heat and close by, the penis will become erect. You typically don't see the penis, as it is "hidden" inside the prepuce, or sheath. Depending on the size of the dog it can be quite long, so I would consider this likely to be normal as long as it returns completely inside the sheath once the arousal is over.

Sometimes an unneutered male will get a little excited due to hormones and the penis will protrude and swell a little and also be noticeably red. As long as it eventually goes back in it is nothing to worry about.
