How to correctly use a bulb syringe to clear newborn puppy airways?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 8 months and 13 days old

Hello Vets, I feel so nervous about the future birth giving of my dog. What do you mean when the vet said "clear the pup's airway with a baby bulb syringe--mouth first, then nose" I basically understood the thought, but do I have to suck out or suck in the air? Thank you!

Puppies are born in sacs filled with fluid. Most of the time the dam tears the sac and cleans the puppy. In some cases such as a c-section, we have to open the sacs, remove the puppy, and wipe the fluid away from the nostrils and airway. The bulb syringe is used to aspirate fluid and mucus out of the oral cavity. You should only have to perform this once or twice.
