My dog in heat has a strong vulva odor. Could it be vaginitis?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Just submitted a question about my dog licking her vulva while in heat. Forgot to mention that there is also a very strong odour coming from her vulva when she is not wearing her diaper. What is the cause of this? Is it a concern? Vaginitis? There is spotting but not discharge or other sign of infection.

It is possible that she is suffering from vaginitis as usually a strong odour is not present during a heat cycle. with vaginitis discharge is not always present but a bad odour is definitely a good reason to suspect it. i would recommend to take her to the vet as she will probably need an antibiotic course.
