My dog has muzzle sores & licks paws: Is it heartworm related?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Staffordshire Terrier | Male | neutered | 4 years and 1 month old | 57 lbs

My 60# American Staffordshire is waiting out the last stage of inactivity from heartworm treatment. He has several sores, like big pimples, around his muzzle. He has also been licking the backs of his paws excessively. Are these things likely to be related? I haven't bathed him in months because it gets his heart beating faster than I'm comfortable with allowing due to his condition.

They could be related. He could have allergies and a secondary skin infection. Have him examined by your vet to determine the cause. He may need an antibiotic and anti-histamine to treat the problem. A bath with a medicated dog shampoo may help, if you feel comfortable with giving him a bath.
