My dog gets diarrhea from toothpaste. What are safe homemade options?

It should be fine to use any dog tooth paste but every pet is different so just watch to make sure it doesn't get worse. Just make sure to use the appropriate amount and not be excessive. Best of luck and please feel free to post any additional questions.

The most important part of a home dental care program is actually just brushing the teeth at all and does not seem to make a difference which toothpaste is used unless you use a proven toothpaste. There are actually only 2 toothpastes on the market that have been proven to help improve dental health in dogs. I have found that homemade toothpastes are not very good tasting (so it makes it harder for you to brush the teeth) and would recommend using a good brush without any toothpaste instead of making a homemade toothpaste. Hello, thank you for using Pet Coach. You are likely to get better compliance from Joshie if you use commercial toothpaste made for dogs as it is flavored and dogs actually like it. If you don't make it taste good she will probably not be too happy with the brushing procedure. What is bad for dogs in human toothpaste is the flouride. So, esentially you can use human children's toothpaste as it does not contain flouride. She probably won't like those flavors either though. You can make your own toothpaste if you want to. Baking soda is not toxic to dogs and should be fine to use. Do not use hydrogen peroxide as that will cause vomiting if she swallows too much of it. There are a number of potential causes of such clinical signs, including dietary indiscretion, pancreatitis, parasite infestation, infection, and ingestion of a toxin or poison. Because you have only noticed these signs over the course of a few hours I would continue to monitor Ziggy at home. Rest Ziggy's gastrointestinal tract by holding back food for a few hours. Then you can continue with a bland and easily digested food of the boiled chicken breast and white rice diet and provide plenty of fresh water. Good job on brushing Lucy’s teeth and I hate to hear that you woke up to vomit! While it is possible that the toothpaste upset her stomach, it could have just been a fluke. Vomiting is due to many reasons: parasites, infection, ingesting something upsetting his stomach, dietary intolerance, toxins, organ disease and intestinal blockage. At home you can feed her a diet of 25% plain boiled white meat chicken and 75% plain boiled white rice. If this does not make the vomiting stop within 24 hours or if she is exhibiting other signs of illness then I recommend to have her seen by her veterinarian since there are so many causes. It is not a good idea. Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate - if Sadie swallows a lot of that, that high sodium can cause her some serious issues. Baking soda also does not taste very good so Sadie probably won't like it. It is best to use toothpaste made for dogs. Hi there and thank you for using Boop by Petco to address your concern. Many cases of diarrhea can be directly linked back to the diet or an imbalance of GI bacteria. If Mason has been on the same food for a while now, I would initiate a bland diet as outlined below and then transition back to the regular dog food 3 days after the diarrhea resolves. If he is still having diarrhea, I would consider switching to a low fat / GI / sensitive stomach formula such as Science Diet or Royal Canin. As for the gums, just because he does not have much tartar does not mean he doesn't have bacteria in his mouth. He may have a larger than normal bacteria population in his mouth causing the bad breath. If he has not had a dental cleaning ever or its been a while, I would recommend having a veterinarian professionally clean his teeth to help with the bad breath. Most dog toothpastes are made to be safe to ingest because we just can’t trust a dog not to swallow the toothpastes! Unless the label specifically says not to ingest the toothpaste I don’t think there is a concern with what you are doing, though without the action of brushing the teeth you won’t get the full effect of the toothpaste, but it sounds like brushing just might not work out for Gracie! Not all dogs tolerate it. You could try a different canine toothpaste just in case she prefers another. I recommend the CET brand toothpaste for dogs. Best of luck!

I wouldn’t recommend using this combination to brush your dog’s teeth. While the coconut oil probably tastes good, it will just add unwanted calories to your dog’s diet, even if you are using a small amount. And the baking soda will be too harsh and abrasive for your dog. Instead I would recommend a toothpaste specifically made for dog’s. Or, you don’t even have to use toothpaste at all! The most important part of brushing a dog’s teeth is the mechanical action of brushing away the plaque that builds up on the teeth!
