My senior cat won't eat her wet food. How long can it stay in bowl?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

In Rosie's old age, it's been easier for her to eat wet food. The only problem is she constantly wants a new can before she finishes what's in her bowl. She has been on the wet food since about September. Some days are better than others, but she still is constantly giving me trouble not eating what's in her plate. Any suggestions? Also, how long should wet cat food, once opened, sit in her bowl before I toss it?

Rosie sounds like she's becoming a bit of a fussy lady in her old age :-) I wouldn't give her new food until she finishes the food she has on her plate. Giving her that will make her picky. It's fine for her to have more food, she just has to finish food on her plate first. I wouldn't leave the food sitting her in bowl for more than a couple of hours before tossing it. You can cover it and place it in the fridge to serve to her later. Just gently warm it up before giving it to Rosie.
