How quickly do dog bloat symptoms appear after eating and drinking?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 68 lbs

I took my two golden retrievers out for a walk before dinner. When we came back I gave them they're usual 1 cup of food dinner plus 8 oz. of water. Then they still seemed thirsty 20 minutes later so gave them an additional 16 ounces. But now I'm worried about them getting bloat. If this happens how quickly would symptoms appear?

Symptoms of bloat usually appear within 2 hours of eating, however they can appear as long as 24 hours later in very rare situations. As long as you keep them quiet from this point on, I doubt that you're going to have any problems. There are a lot of things we don't understand about bloat, but certainly a full stomach followed quickly by rambunctious play seems to predispose them. Keep them quiet for the rest of the evening, watch for excessive stretching, the inability to get comfortable, and for sure trying to vomit without bringing anything up. I think it's very likely that everything will be fine.

I can understand being worried - bloat is definitely a serious thing when it happens! Fortunately, from what you've said, I think it's very likely that your dogs are going to be just fine. It's true that eating and drinking large amounts right before or after exercise can be a risk factor for developing bloat, but in my experience what you are describing is not likely to result in any problems. Many people feed their dogs and let them drink lots of water right after walking, playing ball, or some other type of exercise with no problems at all - I don't recommend making a habit of it, to be safe, but it's unlikely that you will see any problems. If your dogs were going to develop bloat as a result of eating and drinking too much, they would start to show symptoms within a few hours. Symptoms would include repeated attempts to vomit, acting restless and uncomfortable, excessive panting, and sometimes a visibly swollen abdomen. As long as they are acting normal, you shouldn't need to worry :) If you do have any concerns later tonight, you can always take them to your nearest emergency clinic for an exam to be safe.
