My dog on urinary diet has new tummy pain, yelps, and hides. Help!

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Female | unspayed | 3 years and 8 months old | 4 lbs

Urgent!!! Our little girl is on the medical diet for crystals in her urine and she was doing well up until now, she is very sensitive in her tummy area and wouldn't let us touch, she wouldn't let us even close to the tummy and she yelps and growls in self defence and then runs and hides all scared. I'm really scared for her that I'm crying and blaming myself for this to happen. What could be the cause and what should I do now? I'm very grateful for your help and support at all times.

If she seems to be in pain when her abdomen is touched than she should be examined by a vet to determine the cause. She could have an infection, pancreatitis, urinary issue, orthopedic problem, etc. Your vet can do an examination to localize the pain and then run lab-work and or take an x-ray to help diagnose. Once diagnosed, your vet can determine the best way to treat the problem. Please call your vet and schedule an appointment so she can be treated properly.
