My puppy barks at everyone, even in her crate. How to stop it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My puppy won't stop barking! She will bark at my hands or simply me and even my dad! The minute he steps foot into the room she starts growling and barking! We've tried ignoring her, we tried telling her to stop barking and even clapping our hands. Ignoring sometimes works but when it gets too much then we just resort to the other options. She sleeps in my room in her crate and she will start barking at me too at that time. I dont know what to do some advice would be nice.

When she barks, she is looking for attention of some kind from you. Even negative attention, such as clapping your hands or scolding her, is better than nothing in her mind. Ignoring her is the correct response, but you can't give in after a while as you have been doing. The same is true if she is in her crate and barking. I know it is tempting to tell her to be quiet so you can get some sleep, but that is counterproductive. Because she knows that after some time you will interact with her, she will bark even more to get what she's always gotten in the past. You must be more stubborn than she is, and ignore her until she stops--then praise her immediately for being quiet! You also have the option of leaving the room or going outdoors when she is barking during the day. Unfortunately you may be encouraging her by clapping your hands. It sounds like she's barking for attention, and hand clapping or even yelling 'no' can seem like you're joining in. It is best to ignore her when she starts barking. If she's driving you crazy you can put her in a 'time out' area like a bathroom - not her crate - until she is quiet for a few seconds. Once she learns she doesn't get attention when she barks it should happen less often, so be consistent. Good luck!
