How will rehoming my timid cat affect my outgoing cat's personality?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Maine Coon | Female | spayed | 1 year and 9 months old | 10 lbs

I have two kittens that I adopted about 7 months ago when they were eight weeks old. One was clearly very timid and the other was outgoing. I am extremely happy with my outgoing cat she is exactly what I want in a pet. The other one is very timid and not what I want in a cat. I raised them according to being as outgoing as possible in Social. My question is... will the personality of my good cat change if I give her sister away and replace her with an outgoing kitten?

All cats have different personalities, and I would worry about what would happen to your existing cat if you give her sister away. They are likely very bonded to each other, and losing her might have an adverse effect on the outgoing cat's personality. Instead of giving the sister away, I recommend focusing a lot of attention on the timid cat. I apologize if I suggest something you've tried before, but I would give her lots of love and attention when she approaches you. Give her treats and praise her when she shows outgoing behaviors. By reinforcing the behaviors you want to see from her with praise and treats, that will encourage her be more social, thus transforming her into the type of cat you'd like.
