Why is my cat coughing, sneezing, and hoarse after endoscopy?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 6 years and 8 months old | 14 lbs

Hi! My cat had an endoscopy a week ago, & 5 days later started this persistant cough, where just saliva was coming up. Also, his voice is scratchy and he is gulping very hard. I took him to get a steroid shot, in case of inflammation and has continued. Yesterday he got antibiotics and a cough suppressant(narcotic) and he is still coughing, sneezing. Any ideas what is going on? Thanks

If the cough was not there before the endoscopy, then it is likely that it has been caused by the procedure or by the intubation that might have been done for the anaesthesia. This is not uncommon and it could last a week or so.
