My dog has diarrhea and vomiting after neutering. Is it medicine?

My dog got neuter Saturday and Sunday he threw up with chicken potatoes and carrots we cook for him to easily digest food he has diarrhea is it medicine thank you

Yes the medications (anesthetics and antibiotics if used) can cause digestive upsets fater surgery. Bland, small low fat meals fed little and often and a probioitc such as fortiflora can help. If he is weak and unwell you should have him checled by your vet to rule out a fever or infection of the wound

These signs could be compatible with an inflammation infection of the gastrointestinal system and surrounding organs (like pancreas and liver). My little Leo(male chihuahua) just got fixed a little over a week ago and he has had diarrhea and vomiting for 2 days now.. he’s eating chicken and rice and accepts a good amount of water or pedialite should I be worried
Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. If he is still eating and energy level is good, I would continue with the bland diet. I would also add in a probiotic such as Purina fortiflora which can be found online or at a pet store. If the diarrhea does not let up and he continues to vomit after another few days or he worsens, I would get him seen by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. He was neutered on Friday and spent the night at the vet. He was also given his final round of vaccines and microchipped. Since he has been home, he has had very bad cases of dirreha. Is this normal after a procedure? He is acting fine, just the bath
Being neutered (surgery with anesthesia) and vaccinated and microchipped and riding in the car to an exciting place was a new and exciting or even upsetting experience, and stressful. I suggest you keep him off food for 12 hours, then feed him bland food (boiled white rice with boiled boneless white chicken meat) for two or three feeds. Then slowly replace the rice with his regular food over two days until he eats regular food again. By that time his diarrhea should be over. If not, he will need to be seen by the vet for a recheck.

Hi, and thanks for your question. That could be completely normal after the procedure and anesthesia. I would suggest to withhold food for the next 8-12 hours and then start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice diarrhoea, more vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. It is possible that he could have had a reaction to the anesthesia or just the stress of being neutered. Or it could be completely coincidental and it could be secondary to something else like parasites, foreign body, a sudden change in food, pancreatitis, an underlying infection, and much more. I would try to feed him some plain boiled boneless and skinless chicken and white rice. I would also try to start him on some probiotics. Your vet should be able to provide these or give you some recommendations. You can try some plain sugar free yogurt but the probiotics in this isn't as good as the cat probiotics because we have different bacteria in our gut than in cats. The next step should be to have him re-examined and likely have some bloodwork done. I would also make sure the vet has ruled out an parasites including giardia which is difficult to find on a regular fecal test. If your vet doesn't think there is a foreign body, they will be able to provide him with a good anti-naus

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Bowser! Anesthesia stress and medications can cause loose stool after surgery. If he seems to be comfortable and if he is on any oral medication consider stopping them in case they are causing diarrhea. Since he is waking up every 2 hours overnight I would fast him for 24 hours to rest the GI tract. Do no limit water. At the 24 hour mark start a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day until 2 normal stools. Call your Vet when they open Monday and tell them about the diarrhea. If it is still occurring they may have you come pick up a medication, The diarrhea in combination with the recent surgery may be making him a bit quieter than normal. I wish you the best!

Poor pup! If he's vomiting, not eating, and isn't able to keep anything down, this is very concerning - so I would recommend taking him back in to your veterinarian today to be seen. It's possible that this could be some type of complication related to his neuter surgery, or could be a totally separate problem. Your veterinarian can examine him and may recommend blood work, x-rays, or other testing if needed to help diagnose the problem and see what kind of treatment is needed.

Diarrhea and throwing up can be caused by a food sensitivity, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, an intestinal blockage, bacterial infection, viral infection, the weather, food change, stress, etc. I would fast Loki for 24 hours and then put him on bland food for two days, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to regular food slowly over a few days. If this does not clear up the vomiting or if he still appears ill or lethargic, you should take him to your vet for a recheck. This may all be stress related, but you never know, there could be a gastro-intestinal infection as well. It is better to feed chicken instead of turkey, as turkey contains tryptophan, which can make your dog sleepy and lethargic.

That is extensive bruising and swelling. The best thing to do is ice pack it 3-4 times a day for 10 minutes to help. Anesthesia can cause vomiting and diarrhea along with the added stress of being at the vet. I would take away his food and water for the next 4-6 hours. Your vet may check some blood work to make sure there are no bleeding disorders and a urine sample to check for a secondary infection. pain medication and strict rest will be needed for the next week until that heals

Some antibiotics can cause gastrointestinal upset. I would have expected that to resolve once the antibiotics were discontinued. Since he has vomited and continues to have a soft stool, you may need to have a fecal samples checked and obtain abdominal x-rays to rule out a foreign body.
