Why is my dog restless, yelping, and looking at his rear end?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I have a 7 year old Maltese/chihuahua mix. He's never had any issues. But now he's restless, won't sit, won't jump constantly looks at his rear end...paces the floor constantly. He's my baby, and he won't even come to me which is highly unusual. And wen I do pick him up to bring him inside he yipes...and the other day he actually tried to bite at me because I wanted to put him in this enclosed area i have for him so he won't constantly wander.. not like him at all....tail down and ears back

Your pup could have impacted anal sacs, intestinal worms, back pain, or hip pain among other causes leading to these symptoms. He does sound very uncomfortable based on your description, and based on that, I would have him seen by an ER vet or find a vet on call to see him right away. The vet can diagnose what is causing his symptoms, and can treat him for them.

Poor dog! He sounds like he might be sore somewhere. It could be his anal glands if he's looking at his rear a lot, or somewhere on his back end. I recommend you get him into your vet for a thorough exam as soon as possible. Hopefully he or she will be able to figure out exactly what's bothering your dog.
