Why is my puppy licking paws raw, has rash & diarrhea? What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 8 months and 25 days old

My 8 month old staffy puppy keeps licking his back paws and it has become raw red and swollen. He also has a slight rash on his skin. And has diahrrea. And to top it off he has a rash around his mouth/lips. How can we avoid the vet and cure this naturally or over the counter. Thanks

It sounds like he has a skin infection. You could bathe him with a medicated dog shampoo but he may need an antibiotic and an anti-inflammatory to treat. For the diarrhea, withhold food for the day and then try a bland diet, like boiled chicken and white rice. If the diarrhea persists than he should be examined by a vet for treatment. He could have a parasite or infection and your vet can prescribe medications to treat.

Poor guy! It looks like he could have a skin infection and/or an allergic dermatitis. His skin is very red an inflamed so the best thing would be to have a vet examine him to determine the cause and treat. He may need an antibiotic, antihistamine, and a corticosteroid to help treat. If you can't afford to have him treated by a vet then you could bathe him with a dog shampoo, like EpiSoothe or HyLyt and see if that helps at all. Hope he gets better soon!
