Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male
Hi, I have a 6yo half breed German Shepherd that is kept chained up. He barks when he is chained but doesn't bark when I walk him. eg I was walking him and a strange dog rushed us; I remained calm and so did he. The other dog was showing teeth and barking and all mine did was pull the chain in his direction. I didn't allow a confrontation because I feared for my dog's safety. I don't think he can defend himself in a fight. Should I be worried?

You did the right thing by remaining calm, and that's likely why Slash remained calm as well. You should never allow a confrontation between dogs, even if your dog can defend himself because he could get serious hurt. If you are in that situation again, I would do the same thing, stay calm and avoid confrontation. Slash is likely barking when he's chained up because he's bored and wants attention. Dogs are very social animals, and GSDs especially need lots of attention and mental stimulation. To reduce the barking, I would bring him inside with you if possible to give him attention, and make an effort to play with him more :-)
