Why is my dog's eye swollen, closed, painful, and has green discharge?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 10 months and 8 days old | 9 lbs

My dogs eye is very swollen he doesn't want to open his eye, he's sensitive to light and is doing nothing more than sleeping at this point. There is also a yellow green mucous that appears after napping, he is in a lot of pain what could this be?

It sounds like Zeus could have an eye infection or suffered injury to his eye, and he has to see a vet immediately. The eye is such a delicate and important structure that any problem with it is considered an emergency. That's because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. I would take Zeus into a vet right away to have his eye examined and diagnosed so his eye can be treated.

It looks as Blaze is suffering from an eye infection, it is relatively common in dogs. you will need to take him to the vet the first chance you get, the vet will check the eyes, if it is indeed a simple eye infection your vet will prescribe an antibiotic eye drops that will probably solve the problem in no time.
