My dog has a swollen toe, antibiotics failed. Should we amputate?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Giant Schnauzer | Female | spayed | 9 years and 7 months old | 70 lbs

Our giants schnauzer has had a swollen toe for over 2 months. Although the test found 2 bacteria, they did not respond to an antibiotics treatment. The vet suggests to amputate the toe. W are not sure as the blood test did not show any cancer. Also the X-ray did not show any bone changes. We are not sure what to do. We think that the amputation is not the best solution as a preventive treatment. Please, advise.

The problem with a bacterial infection that does not respond to antibiotics is that the infection can spread to other areas of Zula's body. It will not resolve on it's own, and it can get worse. You can see if there is another antibiotic that the bacteria may respond to, but if it doesn't amputation may be the best option. A dog can live a normal life without one of their toes. I'm sorry, it sounds like you are in a tough position, hope this advice helps you :-)
