My cat has a gray mass under his tongue. Is it cancer or saliva?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 6 years and 2 months old | 14 lbs

Beneath my cats tongue, when he yawns or opens his mouth a mass thats gray and white appears. He has had an abcess before, and a build up of saliva in his mouth that showed in a lump beneath the chin. The vets had given him an ultra sound for it. Is the mass cancerous or could it be the saliva build up again?

There is always a potential that a mass could be cancerous in a middle aged cat, but it could also be saliva build up again. I would have Chip seen by a vet in the next couple of days. The vet may decide to do a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of it's cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. This will help diagnose if the mass is cancerous or not, and help the vet determine the best treatment for it.
