My dog's chin abscess burst. Should I flush it or see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 10 years and 10 months old | 12 lbs

My dog has an abscess under his chin, is on antibiotics & warm compresses. It just ruptured & has drained. Should I irrigate it with saline & continue warm compresses? What if the abscess is compartmentalized?

I would continue with the warm compress to encourage the drainage, but I would have Kirby seen by a vet in the morning. It should be flushed out, but that needs to be done with sterile tools and saline to prevent introducing further infection into the area. The vet is the person to do it, and I would bring Kirby into the vet in the morning.
