How long can a new cat hold pee/poop in a kennel overnight safely?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 9 years and 7 months old

How long can cats hold their pee & poop? The new cat I brought in & am taking care of, just finished drinking milk (VERY small amount, about 1 tbsp maybe or little more). I'd like for him to stay in for the night in our kitty kennel so that he's not outside in the cold & sprinkling rain. I just fed him the milk, & I don't know when he will go pee/poop. How long should I wait? Or is it ok to go ahead & bring him into the kennel? It's 11:41pm where I'm at & I have to get up at 4am anyways

He will be fine in the kennel for that period of time, and it's lovely of you to keep him out of the rain and cold! In the future, I would not give him any milk at all, as cats are lactose intolerant, and dairy causes GI upset in the form of diarrhea and vomiting.
