Why does my dog scratch ears and shake head during thunder and storms?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 7 months old | 65 lbs

Does thunder affect dogs ears. We've just had a storm come through and during that time my dog keep scratching at his ears and shaking his head. Like we do when we have water in our ears. Thank you.

Some dogs have a phobia to thunderstorms and become very afraid and anxious. It typically doesn't cause a dog to scratch his/her ears and shake, but maybe it was just a nervous reaction. If the scratching and shaking continues, your dog could have an ear infection so it would be a good idea to have your vet take a look at him.
