My dog has a deep red, oozing rash on his belly. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Male | neutered | 2 years and 2 months old | 70 lbs

My dog has a bad rash on his belly and around his privates. He normally gets a little one and I thought it was a heat rash. He has one so bad it's deep red and looks like spots are oozing a bit. He's acting normal otherwise. What could this be?

It sounds like your pit has a allergic dermatitis and he may have licked or scratched the area so badly that a deep pyoderma (skin infection) has now formed. He will definitely need to be seen by your veterinarian for strong medications to stop him from licking/scratching the area and then a short course of antibiotics to clear the infection. You should do it then work with your vet nearing to find out what it is he has an allergy to. Ouch, poor Dutch! This rash could be due to a contact allergy, or he could have a skin infection. It's likely painful to him if it's deep red and the spots are oozing. I would give him an oatmeal bath tonight to try to ease the irritation, and have him seen by a vet first thing in the morning.
