Why is my dog's knee swollen if the X-ray was clear? Is it cancer?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 3 years and 7 months old | 36 lbs

7 days ago the door to my building hit my dog in the right leg, did not yelp in pain, no limping or lameness. At her routine check up the vet noticed her knee (stifle) was swollen on that side. Asked about injury, I forgot the door incident. He was worried about a tumor. Took an X-ray which came back clear. If not the injury what else could cause the swelling? If the X-ray was clear can it still be cancer? No other symptoms still active and happy. Prescribed anti inflammatories.

If the x-ray was clear than cancer is not likely. The swelling is most likely from the door hitting her leg. Other things that can cause knee swelling would be arthritis, ligament injury, patella luxation, infections (Lyme disease, etc.), strain/sprain. If the swelling does not resolve after being on the anti-inflammatory than she will need to be rechecked by your vet for more diagnostics to determine the exact cause and best way to treat.
