My dog's lip folds are swollen and sore. What can I do without a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 3 months old | 35 lbs

My dog's lip folds and upper inner lip has recently become swollen and sensitive. It looks raw and pruney only on the lip, not the gums. There isn't a change in his overall behavior. It's just very sore to the touch when I try to examine him. I don't have money for a vet at the moment but I really need some advice on what could have caused this and what I can do to help him?

Zeus could have an infection, allergic reaction, or possibly an auto-immune disease. I understand that you are not able to take him to a vet at the moment but an oral antibiotic and anti-inflammatory may be needed to treat the problem. You could bathe him with a medicated shampoo and/or try Mal-a-Ket wipes on the folds and see if that helps but he probably will need some veterinary care to treat the problem. Call some local vets and see if one can work out a payment plan. Hope he feels better soon!
