My dog has a weeping neck wound and losing hair. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pug | Male | neutered | 1 year and 7 months old | 16 lbs

There is a smallish weeping wound on my dogs neck/back which just seems to be getting worse and his hair is falling out around it. What could it be?

It sounds like your dog has a skin infection so he should be examined by a vet to determine the exact cause. It could be secondary to an injury or possibly allergies. He may need an oral antibiotic and an anti-inflammatory to help treat the problem.

Even though a picture would help to understand better the underlying cause, this presentation could be due to a trauma or localised spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and eventually antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection can eventually be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid licking.
