My dog's eye is bloody after vet visit. Should I get a second opinion?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pug | Male | neutered | 27 lbs

Vet tech restrained my dog (12 year old pug) roughly while another cut the dog's nails. When the dog was returned to me the left eye was 'filled' with blood. The vet said it should heal on its own. Should I get a 2nd opinion?

In cases of trauma that cause a dog's eye to fill with blood, there is a good prognosis for recovery, but sometimes medications can be prescribed to help with inflammation that may arise from the bleeding. In addition, Buddy should likely have an Ecollar to prevent him from scratching or rubbing at his eye. It sounds like to me that you are quite concerned that his eye has filled with blood, and it's perfectly fine to get a second opinion on treatment for it. As I said above, medications may be prescribed to help with inflammation, and that might be an option for Buddy, but that depends on the opinion of the vet who can see him in person. I think for your peace of mine, it would be good to have a second opinion.
