Why do my cats fight and act dominant, then suddenly get along?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 4 years old

Both of my cats are all nice to each other one moment, chasing each other the next, and then totally having a dominance test the other. For example Oreo and Bliss's fur lift up everywhere and they stare down the other, looming closer. Like Bliss could do it once then Oreo. But then they're all nice and grooming each other and playing with each other later. What is this behavior? Are they fighting for dominance? Because Bliss seems to be more dominant at times. Thanks!

It could be that they are fighting for dominance, or they could be playing flighting with each other. Given that there is no aggression in the fighting (i.e. biting), it's more likely they are just playing with each other. It could also be that one gets annoyed at the other, they argue over it, and then get over it. It's natural for cats who live together to have incidents like this, and as along as there is no biting or aggression, it's not something to be too concerned over :-)
