How much exercise does my aging dog need if she's slowing down?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My dog is aging and I'm uncertain how much exercise she now needs. She was very active when she was younger, and we still go for at least 1 or 20-30 minute walks a day and a 4-5 mile walk 2-3 times a week. She acts like she still wants to play catch, but will only play for about 5 minutes, when she used to play for hours. I'm uncertain if this is normal. She does not seem to be in any pain.

This is a great question! It is normal that your dog will slow down with age, and want to play less. I would recommend following her lead. If she wants to play ball for 5-10 minutes and then stops after that, it's fine. Same for when she is on walks. If you wants to end early, I would stop the walk and bring her back home. It's great that you are getting her as much exercise as you are now, and I'd keep it up as long as she wants it :-)
