Am I overfeeding my 10-month-old puppy? How much should he eat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 8 months and 27 days old

How often should i be feeding my 10 month old dog? i feel like i have been feeding him too much and would like to get on a daily routine with him on my feeding habits. I fill about half or sometimes full of a red solo cup up and feed him probably about 4-5 times a day and i feel as if it is over feeding.

If you aren't measuring his food and are feeding him 4-5 times a day, then yes I would be concerned that you are over feeding Rocky. It's great that you want to get on a daily routine with feeding him! He should be fed a puppy formulated food until he is a year old. That's because he needs higher amounts of protein, calories, and calcium than an adult dog, and a puppy formulated food will provide it. You should feed Rocky twice a day, once in the morning and once in the early evening. I would feed him according to the package instructions on his dog food, and use a measuring cup to measure out his food.

Here is a link about feeding puppies: https://www.petcoach.co/article/feeding-puppies-what-when-how/ It is difficult for me to know if this is enough food or not because I can not palpate Rocky's body to know if he has a good body condition score. If he is too thin, then yes, he would benefit from increasing his food. If his weight is good, you will slightly increase it it every time he gains a few more pounds. Your veterinarian is often the best person to help you since they can physically examine Rocky. I hope this helps.
