My dog is suddenly limping and won't move. Is it a hip injury?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Staffordshire Terrier | Male | unneutered | 8 years and 4 months old | 75 lbs

We came home to find that our dog didn't(couldn't) come out of his house nor did he want(couldn't) move. When he finally did he was limping and it seemed like either his hips or one or both of his hind legs was injured. He was perfectly fine earlier today and wasn't limping. No other injuries are visible.

Poor Bum-Bucha! While home alone, he could have hurt himself jumping off a bed or couch. It does sound like to me he's very painful, so you have a few options here. In my opinion, the best option is to find a vet on call to see him ASAP or take him into an ER vet. You can rest him tonight, and then take him into the vet first thing in the morning. Or you can rest him for a few days, see if he improves, and then take him into the vet if he doesn't. It's up to you, but as I said, given that he suddenly became lame and doesn't want to move, I think it would be best he was seen by a vet now. At the very least, I would have him seen in the morning. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given.
