Senior dog peeing, drinking, panting, and struggling with stairs?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pembroke Welsh Corgi | Male | neutered | 25 lbs

Our dog, Rhett, a 12 year old Corgi has been peeing in the house the past few days, drinking a LOT of water, and is panting and out of breath coming up the stairs - and has also had problems coming up and going down the stairs lately. Please, what should we do??

I would have Rhett seen by a vet in the morning, as it sounds like are a couple of things going on with him. Peeing in the house and drinking a lot of water could be caused by diabetes, kidney failure, a UTI, or bladder stones. Panting and being out of breath coming up the stairs could be due to cardiac disease. The problems going up and down the stairs could be caused by arthritis, or back or joint problems. I would have a physical exam, geriatric blood test, urinalysis, and possible x-rays done on Rhett to diagnose what is causing his multitude of symptoms. Once a diagnosis/diagnoses are made, the vet can discuss a treatment plan with you.
