My cat swallowed string 2 weeks ago. It's not out. Is surgery needed?

My 4 year old cat ate a string, it's been 2 weeks now and it's still not out! The vet xrayed him and said the string is still there and to give him olive oil to help the constipation. He's not vomiting, he's hydrated and he's eating well. He doesn't seem to be ill at all except for the constipation and straining. What should we do? And is the surgery the best solution now?

Because the string isn't passing, and Cloud is having problems with constipation and straining, I would say that the string is causing problems and I would consider having surgery to have it removed. After two weeks, it's likely not going to pass on it's own, so in my opinion, surgery is the best solution.
