Can my dog live happily with a cataract if I can't afford surgery?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 3 years and 7 months old | 16 lbs

My dog has a cataract in one eye, we took her into a specialist and they gave us eye drops for inflammation. We sadly cannot afford the surgery, which was estimated just over $3000. Can my dog live a happy life with a cataract that we can't afford to remove at the moment? Our other dog just had surgery to remove a bladder stone which was $700. With our financial position right now we definitely can't afford our other dogs cataract surgery. Any information and help is appreciated. Thank you.

Yes, Mocha can live with a cataract in her eye, it will just eventually lead to blindness in that eye. Dogs can live normal lives while blind in one eye. It would be best to have it removed, but if you can't financially afford it at the moment and accept that it will lead to blindness in the eye, you can leave it for now.
