Cat's tail has raw, bleeding wounds, pus, and hair loss. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 1 year and 2 months old | 10 lbs

My cat had what appeared to be a puncture on the underside of her tail 3wks ago. I assumed it was just an injury from being outside but now she has 3 addt'l wounds in the same area and she is losing hair. It bleeds and has pus. Looks raw. It doesnt seem to bother her. She does groom it but not excessively. Any thoughts?

I would take Missy into the vet right away. It could have initially be due to an injury from the outside, but that could have developed into an abscess, which has now burst and is draining blood and pus. This has to be flushed out right away, and she will need antibiotics to treat the infection. Please take Missy into a vet right away.
