Why is my dog growling while eating? Is it food aggression?

Food aggression is hard to break. You can give him small amounts out of your hand to teach him to take it easy and gently. You can place small amounts in the bowl and every time he acts like that, take the bowl away completely. Once he settles down and calms down, give it back and repeat the process until he learns to stop being protective over it. You can then progress towards larger amounts. Make sure if he has treats or bone, you practice the same behavior.

It's very common for dogs to growl or show other types of resource guarding behavior towards other dogs when they are eating. This is probably causing stress for both dogs, so I would recommend feeding them in separate rooms or in their crates (if they are crate-trained) to avoid this problem :)

You're right that food-related aggression is a normal behavior if the puppy is bothering your other dog while she eats, but it's not something that we want to continue - there is a risk that she may hurt the puppy, and she may also become increasingly aggressive and nervous about being disturbed while eating. Food aggression or toy aggression is a common behavioral concern that can often be worked through. I would recommend hand feeding Sadie for each meal and teach her to “wait for it” before allowing her to eat. Once she is sitting and listening then allow her to eat. Start with a small amount in your hand, then put some in her bowl from your hand, then desensitize her to your hand in her bowl. I would also train her to “wait for it” for any toys she may love. If she is food motivated then she will associate this training with lots of reward and will learn not to “guard” her food or toys. If she is fully vaccinated then she is at a great age to begin puppy kindergarten. These classes are a great way to bond with her, establish boundries, and strengthen your relationship.

It is usually quite obvious is they are aggressive for example they may growl or snarl when you put food down. They may be defensive about their bed or toys. You might notice on a walk that they growl and bark at other animals.

Raw meat will not make Capone aggressive. Make sure to get him neutered at 6 months old and make sure he is well exercised and socialized early.
