How to tell sarcoptic vs demodectic mange in puppies and treat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Female | unspayed | 5 lbs

SOMEONE DUMPED 4 DACHSUND PUPPIES AT MY GATE. THEY HAVE MANGE, NOT SURE WHICH IF IT IS SARCOPTIC OR DEMODEPTIC. CANNOT AFFORD TIME AND MONEY TO GET TO A VET FOR ONE WEEK. KEEPING SEPARATED FROM MY OTHER 3 DOGS. IN THE MEANTIME, DEWORMING AND TRYING TO TREAT WITH HAPPY JACK MANGE MEDICINE. HOW CAN I TELL THE DIFFERENCE. ONE PUP HAS TROUBLE OPENING RIGHT EYE WHICH IS KIND OF BALD AROUND IT, SO USED AN EYE RINSE TO HELP. WHAT ELSE CAN I DO. I HAVE GOOD HOMES FOR THEM ONCE WELL.

Sarcoptic mange usually causes hair loss and thick crusts on the tips of the ears, elbows and hocks (ankles) along with extreme itchiness. Demodectic mange usually just causes small patches of hair loss, although secondary skin infections could lead to skin redness and itchiness. I'm not super familiar with Happy Jack, but it looks like it's a sulfur based dip which is probably not toxic but is not the most effective treatment for either type of mite. I would see if any of the potential adoptive families would be willing to help out with a veterinary bill so you can start some prescription medications (that are also a lot less messy and time consuming than dips).
