How to stop my cat's food aggression and destructive behavior?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 1 year and 10 months old | 8 lbs

Cali came from a shelter in august. We do not know much about her background before that. She will eat whenever there is food out and eats like she will never see food again. Recently she has started to get very aggressive (biting/scratching) in regards to when she is ready to eat. She has eaten/ picked at the kitchen sponge and trys to get into any bags or boxes of human food. She also scratches and tears at doors to tell us she is ready to eat. Is there anyway to fix the aggressive behavior?

It sounds like Cali is suffering from food aggression, which is typically a more common problem in dogs, but it can uncommonly occur in cats. There are a couple things you a try to fix the problem, including leaving food out all the time for her to graze at, or feeding her more frequently, and I will attach a link to a website that details out some methods you can try: http://www.petcha.com/how-to-manage-food-aggression-in-cats/
