My dog has a grey rash, hair loss, and elephant skin. Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 10 months old | 75 lbs

My dog appears to have a bad rash or some type of skin infection. Its on his lower stomach with a Grey color and his hair is gone in that area most likely from him itching. His skin looks like elephant skin. We have an appointment with a vet soon but wanted to know if this is something more serious.

It could be that Apollo has a yeast infection of the skin. As the infection progresses, the dog's skin thickens to an elephant skin appearance. You are doing the right thing by having Apollo seen by the vet soon. It's not serious, but he does need to be treated.
