My dog is still itchy after Benadryl for an allergic reaction. Help!

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Schnauzer | Female | spayed | 1 year and 1 month old | 15 lbs

My dog had an allergic reaction to something today while going for a walk. I gave her half a Benadryl around 7 pm and an oatmeal bath she got better but now she is itchy again. Any suggestions on what I should do?

Given that the Benadryl didn't work to completely cure the allergic reaction, Giselle will likely need a steroid to stop it. I recommend having her seen by a vet now to get that prescribed to her to stop the reaction.

Excessive sneezing can be seen as a result of allergies but also with respiratory infection, or a foreign object being inhaled and causing irritation (this is most common in cases where the sneezing was very sudden in onset, out of the blue!). If your dog has been scratching and chewing at herself then allergies or ectoparasites (fleas, mites) may be involved as well. I would recommend a visit to the veterinarian to try to determine the cause of her symptoms and get appropriate treatment. Benadryl will help with some allergy cases but often we may need prescription strength medications, at least initially to get the itch/allergy under control.
