How to help my senior dog cope with frequent travel and pet sitters?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | spayed | 16 lbs

My mom died and I took her dog. I took her almost 2 years ago. She is a wonderful dog and I love her but I worry about her. I work out of town 3 1/2 days out of 7 days a week. I just left my husband. He had two dogs. She was bonded to the other dogs a small amount, and bonded to my husband a lot. I don't trust him to watch her as he is mad I left so I have to leave her with a pet sitter. My question is, am I causing her more stress by leaving and coming back or will she be okay? She is 9.

Wow, what a tough situation you are in at the moment! First off, I'm quite sorry that your marriage didn't work out, and I hope things turn out better for you in the future. As for Sophie, I wonder if there is anyway you can take Sophie with you when you are out of town for work. Find a hotel that accepts pets or an apartment that will let you have her with you. That way, you don't have to leave her with a pet sitter, and she will likely enjoy being with you more. Otherwise, I would find a pet sitter to be in the home with her, as being in her own environment with familiar surroundings will much less stressful for her.
