How do I stop my puppy from pooping every time she's in the car?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 5 months and 17 days old | 35 lbs

My puppy defecates every time she is in the car regardless if she went right before being in the car. I've tried putting her in her crate and I've tried allowing her to sit on the seat outside of her crate and every time without fail she has to defecate. How do I break her of this habit?

Khloe is very young and will likely grow out of this. It sounds like she is very nervous in the car. You can try to get her acclimated to the car by just hanging out with her a little bit at home while parked and giving her lots of living and positive reinforcement. Then gradually move up to short rides around the block. This may help with her anxiety. I hope this helps!
