Why did my vet prescribe liver supplements for my cat's scratching?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | British Shorthair | Female | spayed | 5 months and 9 days old | 8 lbs

Hi! We have 5months old British shorthair silver tabby, she is constantly scratching her neck so we did a blood examination. It shows that her neutrophiles are low so vet gave her Depo-medrol injection and prescribed Legaphyton pills to support liver. However, I don't understand why liver supplements are required? Maybe he's just trying pull money out of my pocket for pilling her instead of actually helping our kitty? Pilling her is harming our bond with her and I'd like to avoid that.

Hi there! Based on what you've told us here, I'm not sure why a liver supplement would have been recommended. Depo-Medrol injections are a common treatment choice for skin issues such as allergies, so this makes sense given her symptoms. A low neutrophil count doesn't really have anything to do with the liver, so I wonder if there may have been some other abnormal values on Taira's lab work that your vet was concerned about. Since you aren't quite sure why this was recommended, I would suggest calling the vet to discuss - he/she should be happy to explain the reasoning behind it. Since pilling Taira is difficult and stressful for both of you, he/she may also be able to suggest an alternative option that would be easier to manage if a supplement is still needed.
