My cat won't eat, is lethargic, and breathing fast. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Siamese | Male | neutered | 8 lbs

My cat is hardly eating or drinking because he is in pain when he swallows. He is also lethargic and breathing rapidly. What should I do to keep him comfortable until I can see the vet?

Poor Tate sounds quite painful! It's very important to not give him any human pain medications. Many are toxic to cats and are fatal if given. You need to keep Tate as calm as possible, as stress will cause him to breathe even more rapidly. Place in him a quiet, small, and dark room of his own while you call around to find a vet on call or an ER vet to see him now. His symptoms constitute a medical emergency, please take him into a vet ASAP.
