Why did my senior dog die suddenly? What could be the cause?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | 12 years and 1 month old | 25 lbs

My Dog Lizzy 13 female collie passed away today. She was a bit lazy all week but was eating and drinking ok so today we went for a walk she stopped and couldn't walk so we came home and she lay in the kitchen not been able to move or breathe. It then got worse she would stop breathing for a minute and take a breath again this lasted 20mins. Was her death due to old age? Or how will I find out. Thank you

I'm very sorry Lizzy passed away today! Without seeing her in person, I can't say what caused her to pass away, but common causes of death in senior dogs include heart disease, organ failure, and cancer. If you want to know why she passed, you could bring her into the vet for a necropsy (an autopsy for dogs). Again, I'm very sorry for your loss.
