Why is my cat suddenly sleeping a lot and not affectionate?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | 2 years and 6 months old | 8 lbs

Good evening Dr. My usually up and about and loving male cat (almost 3 years old) is suddenly acting differently. He usually seeks affection from me and loves to be stroked, but for the past 2 days he has been sleeping most of the time and not seeking my petting him. He is eating fine and drinking water but something is definately wrong. His ears feel a bit hot but not scorching. He still prefers to be in my close facinity but he is different than usual. Do you have any advice please?

Good morning from New Zealand! It sounds like Dice is feeling a little lethargic at the moment. Lethargy is a very general sign of illness, and it could be caused by systemic illness, infection, inflammation, or injury. Without any other symptoms, it's impossible to narrow it down further without seeing Dice in person. It is a good sign that he is eating and drinking normally, however. You can take his temperature rectally if you want to see if he has a fever. A cat's normal temperature is 37.7-39.1C. If his temperature is above 39.7C, then I would have him seen by a vet right away. Otherwise, my recommendation is to monitor him overnight, and if he's still acting lethargic in the morning, I would have him seen by a vet for a health check.
