My cat makes whistling or snoring sounds when breathing. Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 3 years and 3 months old

For some time I've been able to hear my cat breathing. At first we thought it was a stuffed nose because of the winter, but it's still going on. It happens for a moment, it sounds as if her nose is whistling and other times it sounds like a snore. She's a bit overweight, but runs and plays without trouble. What could be happening?

This may be normal for her, especially if she isn't exhibiting any other symptoms. It certainly could be some mild congestion, which is common this time of year as the heat vents tend to blow dust around. But as long as there are no other symptoms, like wheezing, coughing, nasal discharge, or inappetence, you may have nothing to worry about. You might try weight loss to increase her overall quality of life!

It could be more serious, but it may be hard to diagnose. X-rays would be a good first step to check for any narrowing of the trachea or current lung abnormalities. A sedated oral, nasal, and pharyngeal exam can look for scar tissue, abnormalities, or polyps that can cause this to happen. If those are both normal, then a CT scan or MRI may be needed to find the cause for the narrowed airway (which often causes the whistle sound when breathing).
