Is a blood test necessary for my senior dog's arthritis meds?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd | Female | spayed | 13 years and 3 months old | 46 lbs

We have a 13 year old Australian shepherd with athritis in her back and knee. We have been. Giving her quillin 100mg daily for approx 1 year now our vet Will not refill without a blood panel done. We are aware of the side effects and not understanding why she needs a $300.00 blood test. Would you recommend the blood test and why. Thank you

Great question! Yes, I would recommend having the blood test done on Blazer. Even though you are aware of the side effects, there could still be effects on her organs from the medication that are not seen symptomatically. It's very important to have her organ function checked to make sure there hasn't been any damage done to her organs from the medication.
